Guest Fitness Instructor Life at a Resort

So what’s life like as a guest fitness instructor at a resort?

Guest Fitness Instructor Amy teaching 11:00 Aqua Aerobics at a Caribbean Resort

"The Lady Amy" teaching Aqua Aerobics

Each resort has its own feel, or “flavor” so to speak, but a typical rundown goes something like this:

Our teaching starts on Monday. Most often, I have met either the activities director, or entertainment director on Sunday (arrival day). If not, I do on Monday morning to go over the week’s schedule. Most, but not all, resorts also have a “resident instructor” that is a local. Your contact may be the resident instructor instead of the activities, or entertainment director. All of this is spelled out in the contract you receive before departure.

I hesitate to put a “typical” or common schedule, because all resorts vary, but I will post three very familiar themes. I can say that you will not teach more than 3 classes per day and you never ever teach on arrival or departure days. Aqua is a common format at almost all resorts except Spinning only contracts.

Three common teaching schedules:

Scenario One:
*Early morning power walk (departing between 7 and 8 am- usually taking place on the golf course, thus the reason for early departure, so we are finished before the golfers tee off). I’m normally called into action in the AM so Amy can sleep in, John
*Mid-day aqua (11 am or noon start)
*Later afternoon class (4 or 5 pm start- has been a wide variety of formats ranging from step to Pilates/yoga)

Scenario Two:
*Morning class (9 am start- varying formats)
*Mid-day aqua (11 am or noon start)
*Later afternoon class (4 or 5 pm start- varying formats)

Scenario Three:
*Morning class (8 or 9 am start- varying formats)
*Mid-day aqua (11 am or noon start)
*Early afternoon class (2pm start- varying formats)

Usually classes go for about 45 minutes. I let the crowd dictate how long we go. Heat and sun will play a big factor. As for the number of participants, it really depends on “the house”. Sometimes the crowd for the week is fired up and super active- that is a blast and classes are big and energetic. My aqua class in Mexico was over 60 people. Other weeks, people just want to chill and that’s good too. I never pressure anyone, but just let them know I would love to have them and the opportunity is there if they want to take advantage of it. Most of the time my classes have been fairly small and aqua is by far the most popular. Don’t panic if you don’t teach aqua on a regular basis (I don’t). Just act like you do, take your professional teaching skills to the pool and you will be good to go. They will love you.

The rest of the day, and night (!) is yours to play and enjoy just like all the other full paying guests.

The first step in planning your working fitness vacation is creating your profile that identifies the formats you are qualified to teach (again don’t sweat the aqua).

Bring Your Kids! Family Resorts in Jamaica

Suzelle Snowden from FitBodiesInc explains all of the family resorts available for you to teach at in Jamaica.  Follow this link more information or to schedule your Working Fitness Vacation.

Great Video Of Hilton Rose Hall Resort Jamaica

Ben Greenfield is a Triathlon coach and contributor to www.indoorcycleinstructor.com. Ben shot this video while he was at Rose Hall Resort last fall for their very first Rose Hall Triathlon. Unfortunately the room Ben has is a bit of an upgrade over what you will receive as that week’s Fitness Pro. The big difference is you will only have to pay about 10% of what Ben paid if you qualify.

Fitness teachers go on working vacations!

Zumba Master class from instructors Diann Belluccia, Sara Norstedt-Sparrow, Nate Blake, Christina Cutler, Xavier Marzan and Dana Walsh.

From http://www.examiner.com/x-31681-Long-Island-Group-Exercise-Examiner~y2009m12d7-Fitness-teachers-go-on-working-vacations

DiAnn Belluccia just booked a cruise to the Bahamas for free! How did this happen? She was recently teaching one of her Zumba classes on Long Island and after class was approached by a travel agent. The travel agent offered her the opportunity to teach on a cruise ship for one week in return for her to provide fitness classes. Recreational fitness bookings are becoming a more popular way for fitness professionals to have the best of both worlds. They get to travel for free, keep in shape, and share their knowledge with a whole new group of people.

All the bookings for DiAnn’s cruise are through the cruise agency, and DiAnn feels confident that her numerous Zumba certifications will allow her to reach each segment of the population onboard. Leaving out of New York harbor, the ship goes to Port Canaveral then to Great Stirrup Cay, a private Bahamian island, then Nassau and back to New York. DiAnn designs each fitness event onboard and is not under an illusion that this is a “free vacation.” Her experience within the fitness industry is extensive and current. She is involved in continuing education programs, attends fitness conferences, and allows herself to explore employment options that she feels are exciting.

“And of course you are in a beautiful setting, imagine doing a latin dance class on the pool deck under the stars at night,” said DiAnn.

Will I Be Moved Off Property?

In the previous post I have highlighted a section of your contract that states:

Keep in mind that there is a rare chance of being moved off property…

This does happen when the hotel over books and needs your room to give to a paying guest. Your chances of being moved are of course the greatest during holidays.

We get this question from Instructors and it’s typically in the form of a statement; “I bet it doesn’t take much before they move you off property.”

Working Fitness Vacation at Breezes Resort Jamaica

We called this the Viagra suite ;)

THE HOTEL DOESN’T WANT TO SEND YOU OFF SITE! Our experience is that the resort management will do everything they can to keep you there. The cost to have you at the resort is effectively ZERO. If they need to move you it means that they will have to pay another resort to put you up + they risk not getting the referral value of you recommending the resort to your friends and students. Our experience has been that we are moved from room to room much more often than being moved off property.

Sometimes it works to your advantage. One year at Breezes we got a notice that we were being moved later that day to another room. So we set off to find where we were moving to, only to find the room number we were given was for an OCEAN FRONT SUITE! It turned out that the hot tube was being re-tiled so they couldn’t give this room to paying guests. The manager actually apologized to us and asked if we would be OK with having the workers there during the day. Like I’ve said before, sometimes they surprise you :)

More resorts have opened and you can now reserve your week throughout dates in 2011 here.

Your Golden Ticket to Paradise

Beside your Passport, this letter you will receive from FitBodiesInc is the most important thing to remember as you leave for the airport.

This is the contract you will present, first to the Hotel’s representative at the airport (most all resorts provide you transportation – the one exception is Rose Hall Resort) , and secondly to the Hotel Manager.

Here is what Your Golden Ticket to Paradise looks like:

Working Fitness Vacation Instructor Contract for Jamaica

How about leaving Husband and one Daughter at home?

Working Fitness Vacation in the Bahamas http://www.workingfitnessvacation.com When your two kid’s Spring Breaks don’t coincide what do you do? Now that our older daughter is at college we had a bit of a problem deciding what we should do…

In this case Carly and I said “see you later, we’re going to the Bahamas!”

Leave him at home with the kids – T.W.O.H

Here is another idea that may be of interested and that I have used on a number of occasions. Leave him (or her) at home with your kids and Travel With Out Him T.W.O.H

For this to work you need an understanding husband who will let you go off for a week without him. Then find a friend who is single, or one who has a similarly relationship, who would love to travel. One of my single friends had a boat load of unused miles. I paid the agents fee that provided the stay at the resort and she flew us first class. It was heaven!

Now, don’t you deserve a week on the beach?

See if you qualify for a working fitness vacation.

Living Well On A Budget How To Save Money on Travel: Be a Guest Instructor at a Resort and Stay for Free

Here is a very well written article from www.livingwellonabudget.com It’s about another Group Fitness Instructor’s experience while on a Working Fitness Vacation:

So how do we afford our working fitness vacations?

We earn free travel every year

So how do we afford our working fitness vacations?

Amy and I are hard working Group Fitness Instructors + work day jobs. We have one daughter in college and a second getting close. In other words; we don’t have a lot of disposable income, but we refuse to let a year go by without a trip on the schedule. Beyond the booking fee your only other cost is Airline Tickets, which can be substantial. So what’s our secret?

We use an Airline Rewards Credit Card.

I know it takes a lot of discipline, but if you pay your bill each and every month (not paying any interest charges) you can rack up enough miles for 1 -2 trips every year.

As the Guest Fitness Instructor, is it worth my time?

Many Instructors we talk to ask, “will I really save that much?”

So I decided to do a quick comparison for Rose Hall Resort, where Amy and I have stayed with our two girls for Spring Break on three different occasions. Please understand that our break is the last week of March, which is peak travel time, so these are their highest rates.  The non-holiday Instructor fee for Rose Hall Resort is $375 + you will need to bring $150 in “gifts” which are typically supplies needed by the on staff Fitness Pro. So your family of two adults + two children will pay $525.00 for a full week, Sunday to Sunday.

Here is what the guests you will be teaching will have paid. Notice this is for a Resort View room, the lowest level they offer and what is typically offered to the Guest Instructor. We have found the rooms to be very acceptable and then sometimes they surprise you :)

From Rose Hall Resort's web site 6/4/2010

So unless you are paid $3,000.00 a week as a Group Fitness Instructor, I’m guessing this may be worth your time.
See if you qualify here.

How to combine airline miles from different sources

Over the years I have earned points on different airline rewards programs and other credit cards. I just found this service; points.com and plan to combine them all for two tickets to Jamaica!

What about using NRG2GO?

nrg2go at http://www.workingfitnessvacation.comAmy and I took a Working Fitness Vacation through NRG2GO about 10 years ago. They seemed quite competent and yet we didn’t feel very comfortable with all the rules and requirements they imposed on us.  To their credit I’m sure there are lots of irresponsible Group Fitness Instructors, who’s only interest is in the free stay, that they felt the need to control them. Amy and I are professional adults. We don’t need to be micromanaged and so we didn’t use them again.

I visited their site and see that they don’t offer as many choices as Fitness PRO Travel

One advantage: they do offer travel to Cuba if you are not an American citizen.

What about the children? T.W.O.K.

“I could never leave my kids!” is a very common response Amy and I hear from other instructors, when we talk about our Working Fitness Vacations. We typically hear a steady stream of; I can’t, I couldn’t, I would never, etc…

Really? What if your spouse came home and said “we won an expense paid trip for two, to Hawaii!”

Are you saying you wouldn’t go?

You may think me a bit harsh when I say; “leave your kids. They’ll be there when you get back.” Air travel is very safe, despite what you may have heard Jamaica is very safe.

Side Note: Almost everything negative you hear about Jamaica is second hand, typically from someone who’s entire experience was the 3 hours ashore in Ochos Rios off a cruise ship. You will have a very similar experience at the port in Miami.

Amy and I started “Traveling With Out Kids” (TWOK) and teaching in the mid 90′s -when Instructor Programs were quite new – and our kids were 5 and 8 years old. We started describing our trips as “Marriage Enrichment Weeks” telling the girls (Abby and Carly) that mom and dad needed to take this week, so we would stay married the other 51!

I had won a trip to Mexico through my day job a few years earlier, so we had left our two girls at home before.  The trick to TWOK was finding care for our girls, that we would feel comfortable leaving them home with. Neither my, nor Amy’s parents were available, so we looked elsewhere. Here are some suggestions:

  • Neighbors – If you have some with similar aged kids suggest swapping kids while you each take a “Marriage Enrichment Week”.
  • Teachers – We were lucky that our girls had a number of young married teachers, who were thrilled with the prospect of watching our girls. Sometimes they stayed at our house, other times it was like an adventure for the girls living in another home.
  • Single friends  – This worked for us on a number of occasions and our girls loved the experience.

Do we miss our girls while we are gone? Yes, but not until the end of the week.

Did our girls miss us? Absolutely, but we feel Abby and Carly learned to feel safe and confident without us. They are now confident, secure, young ladies.

Please let me know if this was helpful to you or if you have other questions.

Teach in Jamaica at an All – Inclusive Resort

Amy and I have traveled with FitBodies Inc over 25 times because Amy is an ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor, which is the primary requirement to participating in this fabulous program: teach a few Group Fitness classes each day in exchange for a free stay at an All Inclusive resort in the Caribbean. Everything changed when Suzelle Snowden, the owner of FitBodies, Inc send me an email that said they now have openings for Indoor Cycling Instructors!

Suzelle’s email happened to come on September 23rd, which was our 21st anniversary, and I wasted no time booking a trip to Couples Tower Isle for the first week in November. I will be the Instructor that week and for the first time, Amy will get to choose when and where she works out ;)

There are many weeks available. Listen to the Podcast for more details and then visit http://www.fitnessprotravel.com to register – It’s free. You only pay a booking fee once you decide what week you will be taking your working vacation.

Here is a link to the resort where Amy and I are going. We were there a few years ago and we are excited to see what a $33 million renovation looks like.
